Halloween Safety Tips

We want to make sure that Halloween is an enjoyable time for you and your family therefore we have put together a few safety tips that will ensure your Halloween celebrations can be memorable for the right reasons.

Being safe over Halloween is simple but a reminder is quite often all we need.

Keeping your Kids safe

  • Halloween Pumpkins: Kids love pumpkin carving and quite often they involve the use of sharp objects to make them.  Always supervise your kids make sure they feel part of the whole occasion but don’t leave them to their own devices especially with a knife.  Let them use utensils that are safe and designed for children.
  • Halloween Pumpkins: Pumpkins look their best when they have been fully decorated with a light inside them.  Don’t use petrol or dangerous lighting material.  Quite often people use tea lights or even better a safe LED equivalent than runs on batteries.
  • Halloween Pumpkins: If you are using a flame to light a carved pumpkin then ensure children are not allowed to touch or move the pumpkin to cause any harm or fires.
  • Trick-or-Treat:  If you are not taking your children when trick-or-treating then make sure you know who is.  Make sure you have a contact number and where they will be visiting.
  • Trick-or-Treat:  Children need to ensure they are kept safe during the evening.  Quite often they are walking around in the dark, road safety education is very important, more important than during the day as light visibility is very low.  If and where possible encourage your children to wear a reflective armband or some other form of High Visibility on their costumes.
  • Halloween Costumes: If and where possibly make sure your children’s Halloween Costumes are safe.  Ensure the costumes do not impair their vision, especially when making the outfit at home.  The material is also important, try and use some fire safe or flame retardant fabric.

Keeping your Home Safe

During Halloween you home security is important always ensure you do not open the door without checking who is at the door, it can be quite easy assume there are some children trick or treating but in reality it could be someone else taking advantage of the situation.  Use your door chain if you have one or your spy-hole.  If you are going out to celebrate then ensure any hazards are taken care of, for example the flame in your pumpkin or any other candles in and around the home.

Keeping Adults Safe

Adults also need to be responsible at this time.  If you are attending a Halloween Party then ensure you drink responsibly and do not attempt to drive home yourself.
